The interior is water-resistant, not fully leak-proof. If your soup or salad dressing escapes its container, the lining contains the mess instead of soaking through to your bag or laptop. But the zipper isn't watertight, so don't carry liquids that aren't sealed and use leak-proof containers for anything soupy or saucy.
