A Celebration at The 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay

We recently partnered with Chelsea Yamase, a Kauaʻi native and ALOHA ambassador, to create a special-edition Shibori Collection. Chelsea, known for her passion for exploration, travel, mindful living, and environmental connection, was inspired by the Japanese resist-dyeing technique, which embraces beauty in imperfection.  The collection features beach totes and travel bags with shibori-inspired patterns, made with our Original Splash-Proof fabric—lightweight, easy to clean, and ready for whatever the day brings.

To celebrate, 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay graciously welcomed us to host a gathering with Chelsea and her community. We kicked off the day with a Shibori dyeing workshop led by the incredibly talented Kilikina Ho on the Kamani Cove lawn. A master of her craft, Kilikina brought the tradition of Shibori to life, sharing its history and guiding guests through three folding and binding techniques. Each participant created their own unique patterns, echoing the inspiration behind Chelsea’s collection.

From there, we continued the day at Waipā Foundation, where we took part in mālama ‘āina—caring for the land. Led by the Waipā team, we worked in the lo‘i (taro fields), helped maintain the auwai (irrigation ditches), and harvested ‘uala (sweet potatoes). The experience was a hands-on reminder that sustainability isn’t just a concept—it’s a practice, deeply woven into Hawaiian culture. Waipā welcomes visitors year-round, offering opportunities to take part in stewardship efforts and meaningful cultural experiences—something worth adding to your next Kaua‘i itinerary!

The evening wrapped up with an intimate dinner at 1 Kitchen, where the menu featured locally sourced ingredients from Kaua‘i and neighboring islands. From rooftop-grown greens to fresh island produce, every dish reflected 1 Hotel’s commitment to supporting local farmers and producers. It was the perfect way to wind down—good food, great company, and sunset over Hanalei Bay to end the day.

With 5% of proceeds annually supporting Hawaiian conservation efforts, this partnership extends beyond just beach bags—it actively contributes to the ongoing preservation of Hawai‘i. Mahalo to Chelsea, the Waipā Foundation, and to everyone who joined us.
